    Admiral Cinda, shame on you. Telling the kiddos that was a Brussels Spout festival. 😂 Cool beans, y’all made it to the Dismal Swamp. They packed y’all in that lock. The swamp is so scenic. Hopefully nobody had any ticks. I can see why Capt Mark was looking forward to the Dismal Swamp. I’m like him, the sounds at night in the swamp is awesome. Especially when I have tinnitus really bad. The night time sounds help drown out the tinnitus. The kids looked like they were enjoying the wildlife as y’all were cruising along.

      It was a magical day on the water with all the critters -- ticks excluded. Thankfully we avoided the ticks, but others weren't as lucky. One of the boats had a dog that literally had hundreds of ticks on it. They spent hours picking them off. Yuck. And too bad we missed the Brussels sprout festival LOL

      We had an electrician on board for two solid days. He traced our problem back to a ground on our washer and dryer. After that, we were pretty good. We still crossed our fingers and toes every time we pulled up to a marina with GFCI pedestals. We had an issue with one other pedestal but in hind sight we think it was an issue with the marina. If you are having issues, just steer clear from new marinas with the GFCI pedestals if at all possible.

    Don't worry about the bugs in the Dismal Swamp, they're nothing compared to what you'll encounter in Canada, and here in Michigan. We feed our mosquitos and horse/deer flies with real food. Might want to keep a line tied to the kids or the bugs up here might take home a prize.

    Looks like a lot of dependence on electronics. The approach to Snows cut utilizes range markers for channel guidance. The rock pile at low tide has the markers literally on top of rocks. I have seen very expensive yachts holed using electronics in the rock pile. Use your electronics but learn to read the water. Good luck and safe travels.

      Great advice for new and novice boaters! Guessing you haven't seen any of our other videos where I used old-school paper maps as they are my preferred method of navigation having grown up using them before fancy apps and navigational aids were in the palm of our hands. That said, in addition to paper, we use at least two different electronic navigation aids for up-to-date information on shoaling, hazards etc. Bob's tracks are a game changer for the ICW especially in GA and SC. And of course we read the water and markers too. We use it all and that has kept us safely boating for decades :)

    That's the first time I've seen Series 60 Detroits in a boat. Usually the boat Detroits are 2 strokes. I've got a Series 60 in my big truck. I get over a million miles (roughly 17k hours) between rebuilds.

      They are incredible engines! And the fact that they are in so many trucks is super helpful finding parts and mechanics. Here's to another million miles with your Series!

    Not to take away from any of the other looper videos, but yours are so far, the most entertaining. Kind of figured they would be after watching all the Virtual Boat Shopping videos. Which is a perfect segway to why question. You replied about the SkyHook on the Grand Banks after last video, but I remember either you or OnFIREFamily discussing the pods that would hang down from one of those boats. Have you heard of any doing the loop and would you consider doing the loop with them with everything that can be in the water? Dismal Swamp, yes or no?

    • @TheBoomershines
      @TheBoomershines 11 днів тому

      LOL we aim to entertain (and educate and inspire) so glad to know we are succeeding at part of our goal :). Pods are fantastic and extremely maneuverable but also very vulnerable. We knew a few boats that did the loop with Pods. Most of those loopers already had the boat and then decided to loop with it. They all had issues along the way but nothing that time and money could not fix. They also require more servicing which is tricking to find & coordinate along the loop. Based on our observations, we'd avoid pods for a loop boat if possible.

    • @TheBoomershines
      @TheBoomershines 11 днів тому

      And regarding the Dismal Swamp -- that is a never ending question amongst loopers. We will give you our answer and experience in the next few vlog episodes. Stay tuned!

      @@TheBoomershines That was more, if you had a boat with pods would you do the Dismal Swamp. Think your 1st reply answered that

    Ah yes the emergency. 3 days after leaving Eureka, CA on what would turn out to be a 17 day 6 hour trip to HI we blew a transmission seal. No problem while we had wind to sail. When we lost wind and did not find bobbing along at 1-2 knots that enjoyable we would start the engine. We were on a 3 on 6 off schedule and seeing how I took take of all the engine issues it was my task to drop down in a 2X2 foot hatch and deal with the transmission fluid. I had placed a 8x12 cake pan in the engine bilge to catch the transmission fluid. I would suck up the fluid out of the cake pan with a large turkey basting syringe and put in a plastic jug then refill the transmission with refresh the transmission with new fluid. We had about 3 gallons of new transmission fluid onboard when we left Eureka. The problem was I could hear the transmission clunk when it got low on fluid and even if it was 2Am I would get up and deal with it. Ya got to love a good Emergency.

      YIKES! That was an emergency indeed! Ours was just a tiny hiccup emergency in comparison. It is amazing how creative, resilient and brave you can be when needed. So glad you figured out a way and got to HI safely. I would have been a total stress case!

    Leaving Beaufort wasn’t my favorite thing either. I understand your anxiety. We didn’t have our marriage saver head seats at time we were navigating these areas. Love Mark’s Forrest Gump impressions 😂 Also, I’ll take a guy who’s quiet when stressed vs the alternative. My guy isn’t a yeller/screamer thank goodness. I think we stayed at that very marina in Belhaven. Fleas in tiny costumes 😂😂😂 All I can think of is those pesky little black bugs that can cover ever single inch of your boat. Can’t remember what they call them, but we had our first experience with them in Belhaven. Good episode as always!

      Those bugs were INSANE!!! Glad to know we weren't the only ones stressed leaving Beaufort. But it sure was fun sitting still there watching all the yacht traffic. Thanks for another sweet comment :)
